The five stories our newsroom is following

What the desk is watching today, and why each one is likely to matter by the weekend.

A newsroom spends most of its day on stories that have not happened yet. These are the five the desk is watching, in the order we expect them to move.

First, the weather. A system out to the east is close enough to change the shape of the week, and the sea and land warnings are the thing to watch rather than the forecast graphic. Second, transport, where the consultation on late-night services closes shortly and the responses become public when it does.

Third, housing, which is slow news until the moment it is not. Fourth, the energy question that returns every summer and will be argued again in the autumn session. Fifth, and least predictable, the local story that turns out to be a national one — this week that may be the row over a market redevelopment in Wanhua.

Each of these gets a fuller telling on air as it develops. If one breaks, it moves to the live desk and to the ticker at the top of this page.
