This week on the Top 10 countdown

How the countdown came together this week, and what moved underneath a top that would not budge.

The countdown is one of the oldest things the station does, and the shape of it has barely changed. What listeners request, what the station plays, and what the week has actually been listening to — combined, counted, and read out from ten down to one.

This week the top of the chart held still while everything underneath it rearranged itself, which is usually the sign of a big record on its way out rather than one settling in. Two songs moved four places, one of them upwards for the third week running.

Requests were heavier than usual and heavily concentrated on the same handful of tracks — the kind of week where one song arrives from ten different people in an hour, each of them certain they thought of it first.

The countdown runs at the weekend and the full list stays here afterwards. If a song you like is missing, request it. The chart is not a survey of what critics admire; it is a record of what a city played.
