Small talk that actually works
Openings, follow-ups and the polite exit — practised slowly, then at speed.
Small talk is the hardest easy thing in any language. The vocabulary is simple and the grammar is simple, and it still defeats people who can hold a technical conversation without effort.
This episode breaks it into three parts. The opening, which needs to be ordinary rather than clever — weather, transport, the room you are both standing in. The follow-up, which is where most conversations die, because a question answered is not a conversation continued. And the exit, which people avoid entirely and then spend twenty minutes trapped beside a coffee machine.
Each part is practised twice: slowly, with pauses to repeat, then at natural speed with the pauses taken out. The second pass is uncomfortable on purpose. Real small talk does not wait for you.
There is a short section at the end on what to do when you miss what somebody said, which is a skill in itself and considerably more useful than pretending you heard it.
