News Lunchbox takes the stories of the day and turns them into something to talk about, which is a different job from reporting them.
Today there are three. The first is about transport, and the real question underneath it is who a city is built for — the people passing through it, or the people living on the street it passes through. The second is about language in schools, where everybody agrees on the goal and nobody agrees on the method.
The third is lighter and generates the most mail: whether a place can be improved without being ruined. It comes up every time a neighbourhood market is redeveloped and it never resolves, because both sides are describing something real.
Each point comes with the vocabulary you need to argue it properly, which is the part learners tell us they value most. Knowing the word for a position is halfway to holding one. Bring your own; the programme works better when the room disagrees.
