In the studio: an afternoon session
A band, four microphones and an hour in the live room, recorded with the door shut and the phones off.
The live room is not a concert hall. It is a room with carpet on the walls, a piano that is tuned more often than it is played, and just enough space for a four-piece if the drummer is patient. It is also, several times a month, where a band sets up in the afternoon and plays to whoever is listening.
Sessions are recorded in one take wherever possible. There is no crowd to lift a chorus and nowhere to hide a mistake, which is exactly why they sound different from the record. Songs get slower. Arrangements get thinner. Occasionally a band discovers something about their own song halfway through it.
This one ran to four numbers and a conversation between the third and the fourth, which we have kept in. The talking is often the best part.
Sessions go out in the afternoon and stay here afterwards, audio and video both. Bands passing through Taipei who fancy an hour in a small room are welcome to get in touch.
