Volunteering opportunities near you
Where a spare morning would be useful this month, and the request that always struggles to fill.
Volunteering asks for less than most people assume. Not a commitment, and not a skill you do not have — a morning, sturdy shoes, and the ability to turn up when you said you would.
The requests coming through this month are the usual mix. Beach clean-ups on the north coast, which need nothing but hands and a willingness to be sandy by lunchtime. Conversation practice with students, which needs only that you speak English and are patient with a silence. Sorting and packing, which is indoors, sociable, and more satisfying than it sounds.
The one that always struggles to fill is the least dramatic: an hour a week sitting with older residents. No task, no outcome, just company. It is the request that draws the fewest volunteers and the most grateful thank-yous.
If you have a morning, there is something to do with it. Sign up here and somebody will come back to you with a date rather than a newsletter.
