The songs that arrived on the countdown this week, and the two sitting just below the line.
Every week a few songs appear on the countdown for the first time, and most of them will be gone within a month. The interesting question is which ones will not.
This week’s arrivals come from three quite different places: a track that has been building on request for a fortnight, one that turned up fully formed from overseas radio, and a local release that took its time and is now moving quickly. That last kind is always the most satisfying to watch.
Just below the line are two more on the edge of the chart. Both show the pattern that usually precedes an entry — steady plays, rising requests, and the tell-tale sign of people asking for a song by describing it rather than naming it.
None of this is a prediction. Charts have a way of humbling anyone who makes one. But if you want to hear next month early, this is where it tends to show up first.
